Washi Tape
Washi Tape
Washi tape is a decorative, multipurpose masking tape that comes in an array of beautiful patterns. The joyful patterns and colors of washi tape nod to traditional washi paper, which has existed in Japan for centuries, where it is used for origami and in Japanese screens and lamps.
We, as knitters and crocheters, often use washi tape to mark where we are on a paper pattern. Known for its low-tack adhesiveness and easy tear-ability it is perfect to mark patterns, and re-mark them over and over without losing adhesion or hurting your pattern!

Interested in the history of Washi Tape?
Washi paper has a long history. It is a traditional Japanese paper made from the inner bark of plants like kōzo (mulberry), mitsumata, and gampi, known for its strength, flexibility, and thinness, and has been used in various artistic and practical applications for centuries.
Washi Tape however is newer! It was invented in 2006 by Kamoi Kakoshi Co., a maker of industrial tape and insect traps, after it received an email from a group of women who had started using masking tape in their bookmaking projects. Delighted by their creativity, Kamoi Kakoshi invited them to visit the factory and asked them for their thoughts on creating a new kind of crafting tape. The rest is history.
